NMS RECEIVES 206 SOLAR POWERED FRIDGES AND COLD CHAIN EQUIPMENT FROM THE PS, MINISTRY OF HEALTH
National Medical Stores has received 206 Solar Direct Drive refrigerators (solar powered fridges) and other cold chain equipment, 6 high power generators from Dr. Diana Atwiine, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health which were procured with support from development partners Government of Japan, European Union and UNICEF in Uganda.
NMS will handle the distribution to and installation of the fridges and cold chain equipment at the District =Vaccine Stores and Health facilities across the country. NMS will also train the cold chain personnel at the health facilities on how to use the equipment.
Priority during the distribution and installation of the solar powered fridges will be according to guidance from Ministry of Health, based on two factors; districts that do not have access to electricity and health facilities where the existing fridges are not functioning or broken down.
Ugandan communities are receiving some of the most reliable cold chain equipment, including the new solar-powered technology that operates without the cost of additional power or fuel.
This cold chain equipment worth US$1million will strengthen vaccination efforts, meaning the life-saving vaccines will be able to reach more people in some of the least served communities across the country.
The equipment will improve storage facilities for Covid-19 vaccines and other medicines that are temperature sensitive at the district level, without which the vaccines and medicines would lose their effectiveness.
The equipment includes;
- SDD fridges including all the necessary spare parts
- vaccine carriers
- cold boxes
- heavy duty gloves
- aluminium ladders
- generators
- electronic refrigerator logs
